SCIENCE CHALLENGES

Challenge:
Science and Digital Citizenship

As students go online to find science resources and "Check with the Experts", you realize it is important that they learn how to evaluate various science sites for authenticity.
Task:
Design and implement a series of 3 min-lessons that center around topics associated with evaluating the validity of science research sources.

Challenge:
Intergrate NGSS Into Literacy and Math

You are frustrated with how little time you have to spend on science in your elementary classroom.  You realize that the Crosscutting Concepts of the NGSS lend themselves to better implementation across the curriculum.
Task:
Study the NGSS Crosscutting Concepts and design and implement a lesson that incorporates one or more of your science standards into your literacy or math curriculum.  Reflect on 1) student engagement in all affected curriculum areas when science was infused and 2) amount of time spent on topics incorporated both before and after cross curricular implementation.

Challenge:
Three Dimensional Learning of NGSS

In the Next Generation Science standards, the National Research Council developed a Three Dimensional Framework to describe what it means to be proficient in science. These three dimensions combine to form each science standard.
Task:
Complete the following: 1) Reflect on the three dimensional learning and if it changes how you think about science. 2) Modify a current lesson or create a new one to better reflect these three dimensions.  Be sure to identify all three dimensions in your lesson. 3) Use the NGSS Equip Rubric with a colleague to evaluate the lesson.

Challenge:
Science and Engineering Practices

“Engaging in the practices of science helps students understand how scientific knowledge develops:  such direct involvement gives them an appreciation of the wide range of approaches that are used to investigate, model, and explain the world.”
Task:
Complete the following: 1) Gain an understanding of the standards for science practice. 2) Choose one of the standards to focus on and change an existing lesson to explicitly incorporate this science practice.  3) Reflect on your change in practice, and how it impacted student learning and engagement.

Challenge:
Personalized PD

Research shows that teachers will engage in professional learning when he or she is given choices in learning.
Task:
CHOOSE YOUR OWN TASK Design your own task that includes inquiry into new learning resulting in a change in practice, reflect on the new practice, and in some form or another share beyond the classroom.

Challenge:
AIW Framework

Research shows that teachers who engage in the AIW  framework provide a foundation of standards for the more complex intellectual work necessary for success in contemporary society for students to engage in.
Task:
Complete the following (1) Bring a science lesson to a district AIW meeting for scoring.  (2) After the scoring conversation, make adjustments to the lesson using the feedback given during the scoring session.  (3) Reflect on the AIW scoring process along with the changes you made in your instruction and how the process impacted you as a teacher.
